Gerry Mc Govern of The Hill Hotel Gurteen explains what MySligo means to him, “Since I was a child I’ve always been fascinated by the rich history and heritage surrounding us. It’s everywhere you look. This is ‘My Sligo.”
Moygara Castle is a 16th Century Castle overlooking the beautiful Lough Gara. The castle was the principle fortress and home to the O’ Gara family who ruled the area around Lough Gara since 1285 AD. The structure is a great example of a castellated building with many of its defensive features still evident today. The castle was attacked in 1538 by O’Donnell and again in 1581 by a band of mercenary Scots.
‘My Sligo’ is an initiative from South and West Sligo Tourism network which encourages people to share what Sligo means to them. ‘My Sligo’ celebrates peoples’ individual connection to Sligo and the diversity of what the county offers to people.
